Final Mock Up Contents Page

This is my final mock up for my contents page. Of course I wont use images of real celebrities but I have just put them on as a guidline. I have chosen this design because I enjoyed making it and Ithink it looks quite proffessional.

Final Mock Up Front Cover

This is my final mock up for my front cover. As you can see I have kept the same design with the splattered paint, the text and the layout. The only thing that I have changed is the main image.
I usually start by thinking about the background but instead of doing that, I thought about what image I wanted to use. I wanted to find an image that would fit the whole page but would still give me room to put text and headlines etc. I eventually chose the one I have used. Once I had chose my image, I thought about the background. I decided to choose the splattered paint image just as before. I made it exactly the same so that it didnt look silly. I also made the banner at the top the same but I just added two more names to it because it didnt fit. I used exactly the same title which was the same font. The only thing I really changed was the main image, I put the slogan underneath the title and I added a few more stories on there. I also put the issue and the price at the bottom so that it looked a bit more proffessional.
I may rethink about the price of the magazine and change it later.

Final Mock up Double Page Spread

This is my mock up for my double page spread. I have decided to use this design for my final product because I really like it and I have made a front cover and contents page experimenting with this particular design. To start off with I thought of the background. I wanted the same background as the front cover and the contents page so I stuck with the splattered paint. I wanted to make the splattered paint image spread across the two pages but I thought it would look silly, so I decided to make two seperate images of the same thing. I thought that it looked a bit strange so I decided to flip one image 180 degrees so it was reflected onto the opposite page. I also thought that each image was to dark and you wouldnt be able to see the text, so I made the images lighter by editing them in Microsoft Fireworks.

Once I had got the background over with I thought about what image I wanted on one side of the page. I decided to use one of my own images but I couldnt decide which one. So eventually I went for the one I have used. I had to edit it in Fireworks because the background didnt look right at all. I got rid of the background completly so that you can see the background a lot better. I also sharpened the image so that it it really stands out.

The next thing that I thought about was the headline and the text. I wanted the headline to be simple and to tell the audience what they are about to read. Underneath the headline I wanted and catchphrase or sentence that really catches the reader's attention. However on the opposite page (the page with big image) I didnt want to much text because I thought it would ruin the page, so I just decided to put the name of the model at the top left and some information about what is on the next page in the other corner. I also put a text box on the left page so I know where the text for the interview would go.

Whilst I was working on this mock up, I suddenly realised that I needed to make a album cover for the singer because I wanted to put it on my double page spread. So I quickly made an image that I could use for the album cover. I remember looking at album cover a while ago and I really liked it so wanted to make GWS' album to look similar. Eventually, I went onto the internet and tried to look for some 'explosive' background images to use. I thought that because the image I wanted to use was black and red, I needed a background that had similar colours. I found the image I have used and thought it was perfect. There was a small space in the middle where I could place the photo and it really blended in.

Edited Front Cover 2

This is another edited version of my front cover. Like the other front cover, I only changed the font to see if it looked better. I changed it to Elementary SF Black. I didnt change anything else but the font.

Edited Front Cover

This is an edited version of my front cover. I have played around with the fonts and the amount of text on the page so because the coments i got said that it would look better if there was not so much text on the front. I have changed the font to Balloonist SF to see what it would look like. I have changed anything else but the text.

Mock up contents page

This is my second contents plan. I had completley different ideas for this plan.
I started with a blank canvas but the first thing I thought about was the images. I thought I would use one of the images I had taken myself instead of using one from the internet. I went through all of the images I had taken and eventually used one of the model standing up against the wall. I didnt want it to be a plain image on its own so I had an idea from a contents page I had looked at and decided to put an effect on. I decided to make into three images but make each one smaller and lighter each time (as you see).
The next thing I thought about was the title 'CONTENTS'. With this also I didnt want it to be a plain title across the top of the page. I wanted to make a bit different. So I decided to split it into two. I thought that this worked really well so I decided to do this with most of the text.
After that I thought having some kind of symbol or shape on the page to put the text in. I decided to use two arrows and make them grey with a black background. Then I decided to fill them with something so I decided to use text. I wasnt sure what text to put in it so I thought I would put the name of the bands in it. I thought that the colour of the text in the arrows would be white because it stands out and you can see it clearly. I used the same technique I used for the title by putting the first few letters of the word the other way round.
Another point about the images is that when I put them on I thought they looked too plain so I decided to put a thin black border around each one so they would stand out.

Contents Plan

This is my first contents plan. I have decided to try a simple design with my first plan. I have kept the origional design of splattered paint so that it matches the front cover. That was the first thing I thought about. I wanted to keep the background the same as the front cover and wanted it to be seen so I edited so that it wasnt to dark but you could still see it.
Once the background was covered I thought about what I would think about the text. I couldnt find the exact font that I used on the front cover so I had to find one that was looked similar. However, the contents text such as the page numbers, I managed to find the font that was the same as I used on the front cover.
The next thing I thought about was the images. I wanted to find images that were related to music so I thought about finding images of famous musicians or singers. They looked too plain when I first put them onto the page so I decided to edit them on Microsoft Fireworks. I decided to make them look 3D so they looked like they stand out from the page, so I put an effect on each one which is called Bevel Boss. This puts a small border around each image making it stand out (as you can see).

Double Page Spread plan 3

This is my third double page spread plan. For this plan I have decided to use my own image that I have taken. This is only a rough plan. I dont think that I will use this because it is not my favourite one. But I thought I would try and see what happens if I used one of my own images.
First I decided that the background would be a different colour than plain. So I chose brown. I personally like the image because I have edited it so that it fits the page and looks like the model is standing against the side of the page. I also like the star next to the image because it stands out but I dont really think that it matches the rest of the page. It has given me an idea for my final product.

Results

I asked 20 students what they thought about the slogam ideas and which one I should use for my magazine front cover.
Play the music, not the instrument
When words fail, music speaks
The Music Matters
Music's in the Soul

Overall the20 students thought that my first idea was the best (Play the music, not the instrument) so this is the one I am going to use on my final cover.

Mock Up Double Page Spread

This is my second idea for a double page spread. For this plan I decided to do a completley different design. At first I thought about the canvas colour, I didnt want to keep it plain so I went through a range of different colours to finally finish with grey.
Once I found the correct colour I looked for different images to put on the page.I didnt want to go with an image of westlife this time, so i went for another boyband that are a big hit. Take That. I looked for an image that had a similar colour tone to the background colour. Eventually, I found the image I have used. The band members are dressed in greys and blacks which are perfect colours. There was a background on the image but it didnt match the colour of the canvas so I got rid of it on Microsoft Fireworks
The next thing I thought about was the text. I didnt want the text to be a ridiculous colour or font so that it didnt match. So I went for plain white because you can see it and it matches all of the other colours. As for the text about the band (the interview) I thought I would keep them white aswell.
I also had the idea to put a small image related to the article such as a publicity shot or album cover (this is what I chose to put on the plan). I decided to choose an image of the album cover 'The Circus'. I thought I would put it in the corner on the right page underneath the text. I also wanted a small pattern of the right page just like my first plan, so I looked on the internet and finally found the image of the flowers. I really liked this particular image because it was black white and really matched the theme of the plan. I thought the right hand corner looked empty so I decided to put it there. I thought it would overlap the text or the text would overlap the image so it looks effective.

Double Page Spread Plan

This is a rough plan for my double page spread. First I decided to use the same image as I used on the plan for my front cover. I thought about making the image small but then had the idea to make it fit the whole page. I put a small description about the band in the top corner and made black so it would match the theme.
Once i had done that, I thought about the opposite page. I didnt want to make the title anything fancy so I just made it what the page is actually about 'Exclusive Interviews'. I decided to keep the clolur of the title black because it matched the text on the opposite page. I wanted to put a border around the bottom of the page so I looked for a pattern to put around it. I eventually found a pattern but I wanted it in black and white so I edited it in Microsoft Fireworks and put it onto the page.
Once I had found all of the images I wanted, I thought about where I would place the headline and text. I decided to put the all of the text on the first page under the title but I wanted something to overlap the image on the opposite page, so I decided to put a headline over the image. I wanted the text to stand out on the page so I decided to put a border around the text.

Magazine Plan 3

This is my third magazine plan.
I decided to use a different image on this plan. To start I got rid of the background on the image so that I could put something else in the background. Once I had done that I made the image fit the whole page. I realised that the title of the magazine wouldnt fit across the top of the page without overlaping the image so I decided to split the title up into two (as you can).
After that I thought about the text I would put on the cover. I decided to keep the same headlines as before but I added some more detail to this one than the others. I added a list of features that are in the magazine and I decided to make them red because it matches the background.
For the background I had an idea from a previous magazine cover that I had looked at, I decided to go for a splattered paint look. Once I put the splattered paint image on the cover it looked to dark and you couldnt see the image of the band very clearly, so I decided to lighten it a little bit. Then the title would be visable. I also decided to put a bar of singers across the top of the front cover because that was another idea that I had spotted from another magazine front cover. In between each singer I decided to put a small star.

Magazine Plan 2

This is my second magazine idea. Again this is just a rough idea. I decided to change the background image and the colour of the title (because it matched the colour scheme of the image). I also decided to keep the headline for the band and put on another headline to see what it would look like. The final improvment i made was put a advert on the front (win an ipod) because I had an idea to do this a while ago. I think the only problem with this plan is that the background needs to be a certain colur because the band members faces nearly blend in with the background.
Please let me know what you think by leaving a comment below :)

First Magazine Plan

This is the first front cover I have planned. This is just a rough idea and it is not finished. I decided to go follow my plan or the title and the background but then I thought about having 2 images in the bottom corners. I couldnt decide what images to have so I decided to put 2 images of 2 different guitars. I thought that they looked a bit plain so I decided to put an effect on them to make them look like a cartoon. I also decided to put a headline on the cover just to see what it would look like. The only small problem with this front cover is that the guitar in the left hand corner nearly overlaps one of the band member's face. Also obviously it needs some more features on it such as a mast head, more headlines etc.

Double Page Spread Research 3

This is the last double page spread that I will research. This is another double page spread that really caught my eye, mainly because of the imagesand the colours. To start with, I believe there is a theme to this particular double page spread. The theme matches the name of the band 'The Hours'. It is kind horror and thriller at the same time but the images are calmer and quiter but made to look frightening. Another thing that matches is the name of the title and the images. The title is 'The Hours' and the editors have made a image to match the title. I think the main image of all of the clocks/pocketwatches is brilliant. I also like how there only one main image in the middle of the whole page and not just loads of small ones. It matches the colour scheme and the theme.
Another good point about the double page spread is the text. Everything about it is really eye catching. The text colour matches the theme and the background, the text size isnt too big or too small and there is everything in like quotes etc. I also like how the text colour has linked with the theme because the theme is horrror/thriller and some of the text is in black and red which both represent evil things. (Black maybe representing dark and red representing blood).
A last point about the double page spread is that the editors have even come up with a logo for the band, which also links with the theme because it is a picture of the band standing in front of a giant skull, it really makes the reader feel uneasy.

Double Page Spread Research 2

This is the second double page spread that i will research. I personally like this double page spread because it really caught my eye.

Firstly, the layout of the page is well thought of. I actually like how the text is on one page and the images are on the other page. I also like how the text is surounded by a border, but especially how the border is made up of the the title and main headline. You can tell that the border has been made from scratch and edited. I think it is also affective that the text is all in one font and size which makes it look very proffessional.

The imagery on the other hand I really like. The main image really caught my eye. The image of the casual person walking on pavement looks as if the text on the other page is on a wall and he is walking past. I also noticed the images behind the figure walking. The images of a crowd have been layered and put in the background through the doors as if they are coming though them or as if they are standing in them.

Double Page Spread Research 1

This is the first double page spread I am researching. This double page spread caught my eye because the main image is a photo of a famous band. The image covers one page and is bold and bright so it catches the reader's eye. The main image is used as the background on one of the pages, which is similar to the other double page spreads i have researched. I like how the editors have put comments and facts about the band around the image. They have made the text boxes the same colour and font as the text on the opposite page to match. It also matches the actual title of the band 'The Teenagers'. Also with this particular double page spread there is link between the image and the title. The photo of the band shows that they are quite 'layed back' and lazy which matches the title of the band because thats what teenagers generally do, lay back and be lazy.
Another good point about this double page spread is that the text font and colour are all the same. This makes the whole page look proffessional and has had a lot of time spent on it. The text font size is not too big (which makes the page look unproffessional) but it is quite small but there is a lot of text anyway.
One point that I noticed when I looked at the page is the colour scheme. The first thing I noticed is that the editors have changed the colours on one side of the page. I also noticed how the editors split up the page and put something completely irelavant to the band 'The Teenagers' and seperated from everything else, by changing the colour of the background to black instead of white or blue.

Contents Research 4

I have decided to research an extra contents page. I especially like these contents page. They are taken from exactly the same magazine but they are probably on different pages.
The first thing I love about this contents page is the effects. The pattern that is up one side of the page is amazing. The 'torch like' figure is eye-catching and with all the different colours faded in it really makes it stand out It actually looks like a smoking torch. It has obviously taken a lot of time and work.
Another thing I love about this contents page is the layout. The main thing that the reader would notice is the images, how they are spread out across the page. Some of the images are at the top of the page and some are at the bottom. Even though the large images are at the top, the smaller images are at the bottom.
The only really negative point about this contents page is that the colours dont contrast. The multi colours dont really mix with the black and white titles. Another point about the pages is that they are exactly the same, which shows that they are obviously from the same magazine.
The only problem with this contents page is that the text is a little bit to small so I dont think the reader would be able to read it, however the font if thetext is all the same.

Monday, 5 October 2009

Contents Research 3

This is the third contents page that I will research. The first thing that the reader would notice on the contents page is that it is obviously for a punk magazine because the text and the font suggests that it is. Unlike all of the other contents page that I have studied this particular shows that it is actually a contents page.
Firstly, at the top of the page it actually says the word 'contents' above all of the text. I love how the text is all in the font, all in the same size and all in capital letter, however it is all in different colours which really catches my eye.
Another good point about this contents page is that the effects that have been edited in are amazing. I think it is great how they have blended the text and images in with background. There are also many different colours used within the background. I especially love how the red text on the right hand side of the page has a sort of 'glow' around each letter which makes it really stand out and how the whole of the text looks hand written because of the font it is in.
A third good thing about the contentspage is the images. They are all exactly what the magazineis about whichis punk or heavy metal. The models are all dressed appropriatley andthe photos all look proffessional. I also think that it is effective how the editors have spread out the images across the page, so one image is at the top and one is at the bottom.

Contents Research 2

This is the second contents page that I have researched. I absolutley love this contents page because it really caught my eye.
The first think that you notice is that the page is in black and white. Most of the contents pages I have found (that are not on the blog yet but bare with me) are mostly in colour so this one is unconventional because it is different. Even though it is not a music magazine, I decided to use it anyway because i love the design.
To start with I think it is very affective that they have used all the different shades of blackand white such as grey. This is probably so that none of the colours stand out from eachotherand they all blend together. I love how the editors have put the whole thing onto a white background and then layered the images on top of that and then the text onto the images.
Another interesting about this contents page is that the editors have put the credits on this page instead of on the back page.
The main thing about this contents page (which is what I love the most about it) is that actual part where it tells you what page things are on, and the credits, look like the pages are torn and stuck on. They look like they have half of the page as if it has been burned away. Also how they are layered over the images.

Contents Research 1

This is the first magazine contents page that i am researching. This particular contents page is one of a magazine cover that used earlier. NME. I dont really like this contents page as much as the others I will use. Before I begin analysing the contents page I would just say that I think it stands out that they have put the name of the magazine in the corner as a logo.
Firstly, the colours of the page dont match most of the covers i used earlier, for example the main colour really is pink. Nearly all of the stories and text and even the border is in pink. I think that it is very affective how the editors have mixed pink and black together to make it stand out and match the front cover.
Another point about the contents that the text is in loads of different fonts. The only real bad point about this is that it probably doesnt match the front cover. However, a good point about this is that it stands out and keeps the reader attarcted to the magazine because if the front cover is pleasing enough that the reader will buy it then they want to be satisfied that the rest of the magazine will satisfying.
Secondly, this contents page stands fo me because it has loads of adverts across the page. The adverts stand out aswell because the text is in bright colours and is in large text so the reader can see it.

Magazine Cover 3

This is the third magazine cover that i am researching. This magazine cover is quite similar to the first cover. However, name of the magazne doesnt spread across the top of the page, it is just in the corner because it is only one letter.
The layout is a little bit different to the first and second cover because you still have the main image/cover shot in the middle of the page but the splash is layered over the image whereas the other headlines are either under the image or around it. There isnt a 'frame' of stories around the main image on this magazine, unlike the first cover. There isnt even loads of stories on the front cover, there is only 4 at the most and thats including the splash.
The colours are quite plain on this cover. The only main colours are red and white, however there is only one word that they want to stand out, which they have put in yellow because it is the name of a famous band. They have kept it plain and simple.
Nearly all of the images on the cover are close ups of the celebrities faces, like on the last 2 covers. This is a technique that many music magazine companies are using. Basically i think tha technique is very affective because it shows all of the celebrities' facial expressions, so you know how they are feeling or what they are thinking.

idea

I thought I would post an idea i had this morning. I decided that on the front of the magazine cover and maybe on the double page spread, I would put on a competition. Such as ''Win a Ipod'' or ''Win a brand new guitar signed by...'' etc
This could catch the readers attention more.

Magazine Cover 2 (research)

This is my second magazine cover that i am researching. As you can see this is quite different to the first magazine cover. This one is different because it doesnt have a main image, it only has one small image on the left of the page. The rest of the cover is all text and headlines. Personally, I really like this magazine cover because most of it had been edited into the picture and layered so that it stands out.
First of all the colours used on the front are different to the first magazine because they are more vibrant and eye catching. They have used colours such as red, yellow, purple, black and some that we may not even see in the background. I think it affective that the title of the magazine (NME) is in one colour (red) and it hasnt been used on anything else on the page. Then, the important headlines are all in yellow or very bright colours so they catch your eye. However the not so important topics/stories are all either in black or white, but they all have different background colours to make them stand out.
What is also affective is that the text is all in different fonts and all in different sizes. This shows that the language must be informal. I would prefer this front cover to the last one I researched because the attention to detail is brilliant. They have tried to put as much text on this page as they can and you can tell that it has been carefully worked on.
The layout on this magazine cover is completely different to the first cover. Unlike the first cover the text doesnt surround the main image, it is spread out all over the page. There is a lot more text than the first cover and most of it is advertising. It is advertising that there are lots of prizes to be given out in the magazine and that would get more people to buy and read it.

Magazine Cover 1 (research)

This is the first magazine cover that i will research. As you can see the image is from the cover of Vibe magazine. To start with the main image is layered over the masthead, this maybe because the image of the person is quite important and the small headlines are layered of the main image. Another point is that the text/headlines are placed around the outside of the page to act as a frame.
The colours of the text are quite affective aswell because they stand out and catch your eye. I believe that the magazine would be aimed at men and women because the text has no femine colours like pink or purple, they are all either white or green, even the important words and numbers are printed in green. However, the image of the model on the front is aimed at women because the model is handsome and made to look cool.
Another point about the text is that the size of it is changes. The important headlines are all in large sizes and are bold, however the unimportant stories are all small and dont catch the reader's eye as much. The language in this magazine doesnt look very formal because the text isnt even straight lines and it spread out everywhere across the page.
There is some hints on the front of the magazine that show that it could be a very dull and boring because the image of the celebrity gives it away. The camera angle of the shot is a medium close-up and you can see his face, which shows he is quite sad and depressed.
Overall, my views on this cover are quite good because things the image, the text and even the language catches your eye and makes you want to read it.
